So, there’s something that has been bothering me this whole week. What does Frank Moses actually want? We know that he’s some big shot from Detroit who is looking to expand his business, but is it money that Moses is actually after? In the previous episodes of Mayor of Kingstown, he offered Bunny Washington a partnership to smuggle drugs, for which he’d take a share of the profits. Usual business. But what made me doubt his intentions was the odd request he had made of Bunny. He wanted to meet the mayor of Kingstown, and for some reason, he wanted him to stand by his side. He actually tried to buy Mike McLusky. It was a bold move, to be very honest. But Mike has nothing to do with this line of business, so why is Moses so interested in him? It can only mean one thing: Moses knows something, and he’s not sharing it with Bunny and Mike. Maybe it has something to do with the Colombians who have been acting all tough lately. I don’t think it’s a mere coincidence that the cartel became so active the moment Moses showed up in town. It’s possible that they have been working together to take out their common enemy, which is not Bunny, but the one protecting him, that is, Mike McLusky. Now this episode doesn’t reveal much either about the Colombians or Frank Moses, but it does point out how powerful Mike’s enemies are, and they are closing in from all four sides, which means he needs to prepare his defenses as quickly as possible. With that said, allow me to take a deeper look into the events of the third episode of Mayor of Kingstown Season 4.
Spoiler Alert
Callahan Is Turning Kyle Into An Addict
The third episode began with the aftermath of the murder of Carney, who was killed in his own house by a member of the cartel named Cortez. If you remember, Cortez was the same guy who had fired at Bunny’s car on the streets, which could imply that the two incidents are connected, but I don’t think they are. The reason being the Colombians had no beef with Carney. He was just a prison guard, which could mean that someone hired the Colombians to do the job for them so that they could shake off Mike’s influence from the prison and break Kyle’s spirit. And trust me, it could be anyone, because Mike isn’t short on enemies. It could be Callahan; the new warden, Nina; her deputy, Torres; or maybe Moses. But whoever it is, they have achieved what they were looking to do. In episode 3, as soon as Mike delivered the tragic news to Kyle, he broke down completely, as Carney was his only lifeline inside the prison, and with him gone, he felt helpless.
It seemed like Kyle had been worrying about Carney’s death and his fate the whole day. His willpower was crushed completely, and he could no longer bear the pain of his injuries and ended up popping the pill Merle Callahan had given to him in the previous episode. By the way, Kyle still didn’t know that it was Callahan in the cell next to him, but Callahan had been closely listening to all of Kyle’s movements. And that satisfactory look on Callahan’s face after Kyle took the pill hinted that he knew that his prey had taken the bait. Sometime later, Kyle left his cell to take a shower, and when he returned, he found a whole bunch of pills wrapped in a paper. And there’s no surprise here, guys; it is Callahan who planted those pills under Kyle’s bed. The episode didn’t reveal how, but I am certain that there are still some prison guards out there who swear loyalty to Callahan.
Through these pills, Callahan wants to turn Kyle into an addict so he can use him against his brother, Mike McLusky. I mean, we all know Kyle isn’t the target here. Mike tried to have Callahan killed in the previous season, and now Callahan’s seeking revenge. Callahan will be pulling Kyle’s strings, forcing him to make demands from his brother, which Mike won’t be comfortable with, but he will have to comply for the safety and survival of his brother. The only question is, will Kyle really let his addiction get the better of him or fight against it so as not to put Mike in a tough spot? I guess we will find out in the next episodes.
Bunny’s Day Out
In episode 3, Bunny had a day out with his new partner, Frank Moses. Actually, in the previous episode, when Bunny and Moses joined hands, Bunny had put down a condition that he wanted to know all the minute details about the trade. And so Moses took him out for a ride to show Bunny how they were going to smuggle the drugs across the border. Bunny got some trade lessons, as he found out that Canada offloads their trash onto Michigan and pays thirty-six cents a ton just to let it sit there. However, there was one flaw in this system, which was that no one bothered to look into the trash. Well, who would want to get their hands dirty, right? But Moses and his men exploited this crack and hid the goods among the trash. The border agents didn’t inspect the garbage, and nobody cared if some of the trash didn’t end up in the landfill. So, that was how Bunny understood the game.
Mike Knows Something’s Fishy
As a part of the murder investigation, Ian and Stevie visited prison to inspect Carney’s locker, where they found a burner and a couple of chunks of hash, which made Ian believe that he was smuggling drugs into the prison, and that was what got him killed. But Mike knew Carney well. He suspected that someone was trying to frame Carney so that KPD would wrap up the case without further investigation, but Mike asked them not to. He asked them to keep it open as long as they could, because it would keep the culprits on their toes. Ian also told Mike about Deputy Warden Torres, who had been trying to fish for information about Carney’s dad. If you remember, Carney’s dad had seen the shooter, and he could lead the detectives to Cortez. Yes, the one they let go due to the lack of evidence. But it’s a long shot. Cortez is going to do more damage to Mike and his friends before he’s dealt with.
Nevertheless, the important question here is, is Torres involved in Carney’s murder? Was he the one who planted drugs in Carney’s locker? Well, why not? We all saw the deputy whispering something to Roberto Cruz, the Colombian gangster, in the previous episode, and later in this episode, he had been trying to turn new CO Cindy Stephens against Kyle. I don’t think Torres knew that Mike had asked Cindy to be his eyes and ears inside the Ad Seg, but maybe Torres was making sure that she didn’t switch sides and end up working for the mayor of Kingstown. And at the end of the episode, he told Nina that everything had been contained, which, I guess, was just a heads-up that he had made sure that Carney’s murder couldn’t be traced back to them.
However, there’s something else you might have noticed. As soon as Nina entered her car, she popped some pills, which I believe could be anxiety medication. We also saw that she had been keeping a handgun in her car, which I don’t think has anything to do with Mike’s threats. I mean, we all know Mike and Bunny are not butchers, at least not the kind Moses and the cartel are. I guess Nina knows that she is mixing with the wrong crowd, that is, the Colombians, and therefore keeping the gun on hand just for her safety. The thing is, if you are in the gangster business, you make more enemies than friends, and Nina is aware that by helping the Colombians, she will be waging war against the mayor of Kingstown and his friend, Bunny Washington. Or if you see it the other way around, then it is possible that it is the cartel that’s blackmailing Nina to do the bidding for them, and no one really knows when they’ll lose interest in her and try to get her out of the way to make Torres the new warden of the prison. Well, whatever the case might be, these two, along with Moses, are so far the most mysterious characters in this season.
The Cartel Strikes Again
While roaming around the city with Moses, Bunny found out that someone had kidnapped some of his corner boys and dismembered their bodies. Well, not the same way Moses had chopped the heads off the Russian thugs. But no surprises here, it wasn’t the Russians seeking revenge. It was Cortez and his men who had been keeping tabs on Bunny’s men and cleaning the streets to make room for themselves. At the end of the episode, we even saw the Colombians cleaning the tub stained with blood, so it was obviously them who abducted the young lads, chopped them up inside their safehouse, packed them in a box, and left it near the Grape Street Apartments for someone to find. The Colombians wanted Bunny to find out that it was them, but either it has something to do with the deal Roberto Cruz had talked to Rapha about in episode 1, or the cartel wanted Bunny to react so that they could use the situation to create a rift between him and Mike.
Robert’s Stalking Evelyn
For some reason, Robert had been following Evelyn all over town. Maybe he was trying to find out what her next course of action was. It is evident from their brief interaction that Robert is getting restless. His body, mind, and soul are yearning to pull the trigger. He needs help, but he’s too stubborn to ask for it. So he’s just stalking Evelyn, trying to intimidate her so she withdraws the case, but from what we know of her, she won’t. However, when Mike found out what Robert had been trying to do, he immediately called Ian and paid a visit to Robert, asking him to stay in his house and keep a safe distance from everyone involved in the case, or he was just going to make things very complicated for himself and may even lose his job. This means Kyle taking the blame and going to prison to protect his friends will all be in vain. Nevertheless, I know Robert’s not going to listen. He’s drinking all day, staring at his gun, and he blames Mike, Evelyn, and Kyle for his condition. It’s obvious that he will eventually take matters into his own hands and end up pulling the trigger, which is going to cost him either his job or his life.
Mike Meets Prison Guard Kevin
In the previous episode, Mike had asked Cindy to be his point of contact in the Ad Seg, but immediately after Carney’s murder, he called off their arrangement and asked Cindy to stay away from him and his brother, as it might cost her heavily. As mentioned earlier, Mike suspected that there was someone inside the prison who was involved in Carney’s murder, and Mike didn’t want to put Cindy or her family’s lives in danger. But he couldn’t leave Kyle on his own either. And therefore asked for help from Bunny, who told Mike about Kevin Jackson, the prison guard working for him. Well, it is no surprise that Kevin’s working for Bunny, because even Nina had pointed it out, but the way Moses smiled hearing this piece of information—I don’t know, the man’s really planning something. Later in the episode, Mike met Kevin to explain the arrangement. But I am not sure how helpful he would be, because we all know that Kevin’s already scared to the bone and fears that he might end up meeting the same fate as Carney. Well, it’s possible that Kevin will become the next target of the cartel. He fits the bill, right? He works for Bunny, and he’s leaking information in and out of the prison, which makes him the perfect prey for the cartel or whoever’s pulling their strings. Well, I guess you already know that in the end, it is Nina who’s going to help Mike with Kyle. And yes, the show has dropped enough signs to suggest that they are going to have an affair in the near future. Or maybe I am just reaching here.
Moses Is Trying His Best to Get Involved
As soon as Moses found out that the Colombians had targeted some of Bunny’s young peddlers, he asked Bunny to let him deal with the situation so he could earn his trust. But I don’t think it’s about trust or a show of power. Moses is trying to escalate the situation. I don’t exactly know why. But like Mike said, you cannot trust that guy. He has some ulterior motive, but we don’t know what it is yet. It’s possible that Moses is putting fuel to the fire so that Mike and Bunny will have no other option but to beg for his support. And when they are at their most vulnerable, he’s finally going to put his cards on the table and make his demands known, which his new partners won’t be able to turn down no matter what. Or maybe I am wrong, and Moses really wants to help Bunny because he sees some potential in the big guy.
In episode 3’s ending, two men arrived at the cartel’s safehouse to take them down. I think these two Black guys were working for Moses, but what I didn’t understand is who sends two folks to take down an entire army? There were almost a dozen armed men inside the safehouse. Maybe Moses overestimated their potential, or he had put a lot of faith in that flamethrower. Well, that big gun did do a lot of damage to the cartel’s safehouse, and I don’t think they would be able to ever use it again. Nevertheless, Cortez, who had been acting as the leader of the gang, quickly stepped up and asked his soldiers to leave the building out the backdoor. The Colombians lost a few men, but most of them escaped. And while these two guys were searching for them outside the building, Cortez took them by surprise. This encounter actually makes Cortez the new bad guy of Kingstown, who’s not only misleading the cops but also killing people in cold blood. We know that he won’t go down easy, and Mike will have to ultimately set a trap to catch him red-handed. But are they going to arrest him or kill him, because arresting him and sending him to Anchor Bay is going to open another can of worms, especially when we know that Mike’s brother is in the same prison. Well, I think I am getting ahead of myself and should end this now. For that moment, what remains to be seen is what Moses actually wants, and beyond that, what are the new warden and her deputy actually hiding?
So, these are my thoughts on the third episode of Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 but do share your opinions or theories on the latest episode.
