Palm Springs is a sci-fi rom-com movie that perfectly fits with the world’s pandemic situation going on right now. The story is about two characters, Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Christin Milioti) stuck in a time loop who have to repeat the same day over and over again, which kind of depicts most of our lives, in this pandemic. Each day seems like it is the same as the previous, although in the movie it is exactly the same for the two. (One might get 50 First Dates vibes starring Adam Sandler, though this way is slightly better.)
The movie opens up with Nyles waking up to his nagging girlfriend, Misty, at an acquaintance’s wedding. He looks bored and carefree wearing beach clothes at the wedding. It seems like the old family-drama-rom-com movie with a gloomy maid of honor, Sarah whose family considers her a liability. The movie takes a sharp turn when these two hopeless characters meet. After Sarah enters into a mysterious looking cave, all of a sudden she wakes up, and bam, it is the same day again. She confronts Nyles, and it is revealed that he has been caught up in this loop himself for a while, and has made his peace with the situation.
Nyles and Sarah are shown as two very complex characters, having their secrets and regrets, but not ones with whom we can’t connect. They are different from each other, Nyles being carefree and much like accepting the situation he is in, without doing much about it.
“In a world like this, not caring comes easy”
But, Sarah is not so passive, she wants things her way and would do anything to get out of a bad trip.
“I don’t want tomorrow to be today, I want tomorrow to be tomorrow.”
They keep on repeating the same day, doing something new every day and falling for each other in the process. Until one day, Sarah disappears! Nyles keeps on searching but could not find her, though realizing how much he misses her and is in love. He tries to understand her and find the answers as to why she is so hell-bent on getting out of the loop when normal life is as worse as the one they are in. He is finally able to put the pieces together. Is it something to do with the day she wakes up?
They finally do meet, and Sarah has the answers to their creative but not-so-great situation and the means to get out of it. But Nyles does not want to get out of the loop.
“But why would I want to go back there anyway, It’s a world of death and poverty, debilitating emotional distress”
He confesses his love for her, asking her to stay with him like this, but she is determined to leave and go back to her normal mundane life.
“I need my life back, and I am asking you if you want to leave this place and come with me.”
Sarah finally leaves, attending her sister’s wedding one last time and doing all the right things before she leaves “today” and finally enters “tomorrow”. Nyles realizes the only reason he was enjoying this crazy situation was because of Sarah, but with her not being in it he won’t be able to live like before.
“I thought I knew how to live. I didn’t, or I don’t”
He finally runs to catch up with her before it is too late. Will he be able to meet her? Will she agree to stay back or Nyles would leave with her?

Palm Springs feels like an old-fashioned romantic comedy movie, except that it is not. It has everything which can make you sit through it. It has the right emotions in the right place with many scenes which could make your heart melt. The part where Nyles confesses his love can be no doubt the best scene among all. And the ending would definitely put a smile on your face!
