‘Just Alice’ Episodes 1-19 Recap: Did Alejo, Pablo, And Alicia Stay In Touch?

Published

During the opening scene of Netflix’s Colombian romantic comedy show, Just Alice, the protagonist is seen rushing into a wedding dress store at the very last minute and changing in a public washroom, and since she couldn’t find a taxi, she had no choice but to hop on her friend’s bike in her flowy white dress. Now that’s Alicia, a complete mess of a person on her way to get married to Pablo, her second husband. Not that she was already divorced; Alicia was married to Alejo, an accomplished writer, but she couldn’t stop herself from falling head over heels in love with Pablo, who had dedicated his life to Christ, but there was something about Alicia that made him abandon the priesthood and instead get married to her. Balancing two separate lives wasn’t simple, as you can already imagine, but Alicia tried her best to keep both the men in her life happy, but soon she started to feel exhausted from all the lies and the drama. So did Alicia confess the truth?

Spoiler Alert

What was Alejo’s secret?

Alicia was not the only one who had secrets; Alejo too didn’t reveal to his wife that he had an estranged twenty-one-year-old son, Benjamin. In Alejo’s defense, he’s been completely oblivious to the fact that he had a son, and it was only recently that a young man had come into his life claiming that they were related by blood. Alejo didn’t believe him at first, but Benjamin’s confidence made him wonder if it was indeed true. He was initially scared, but he ultimately decided to opt for a DNA test. Alejo and Paula, Benjamin’s mother, were in an on-and-off no-strings-attached relationship for a long time, but Paula never mentioned to Alejo that Benjamin was his son. Paula had made the decision to raise her son alone, and she didn’t want Alejo to feel obligated to carry out his responsibilities as a father. Although Alejo regretted missing out on watching his son grow up, he gradually started to understand the reason behind Paula’s decision. His life might’ve been a certain way if he had had to take the responsibility of raising a child as a twenty-one-year-old. Paula wasn’t apologetic about her decision, though she’d come to realize that maybe she should have eventually told him the truth. She never expected anything from Alejo, and she believed that was the beauty of their relationship. The DNA test result confirmed his paternity, and Alejo didn’t know how to react at first. But gradually he came to terms with the fact that Benjamin was his son, and he tried to be there for him. Benjamin had fallen in love with Pablo’s younger brother, Samuel, but as someone who came from a deeply religious family, Samuel struggled with his identity. Benjamin had decided to move to the US, and Samuel risked getting arrested at the airport just to beg Benjamin not to leave. After Samuel was put behind bars, Benjamin requested his father to help him out, but he refused to do so. Alejo wasn’t ready to help anyone related to Pablo, and he was quite stern about his decision. He also didn’t appreciate the fact that Benjamin knew Alicia’s secret, yet he chose not to discuss it with him. Benjamin didn’t judge Alicia, and he strongly believed that Alicia needed to deal with the mess she had created by herself. Paula helped talk sense to Alejo. She reminded him that if he wished to be there for Benjamin as his father, he must help his son in any way he could, even if it meant setting aside his feelings. Alejo realized that she was right; his bitterness towards Pablo shouldn’t affect his son. Alejo shared the contact information of his lawyer, and Samuel was finally released.

What had Pablo been hiding?

Guess what? Pablo too had a secret to share! Pablo and Alicia met for the first time during her brief escapade in Cartagena, and it was almost love at first sight. They met with a minor accident, and that was how they got talking, and they ended up spending the entire day together. The next morning, when Alicia woke up, Pablo was already gone. She never understood why he left without a word, and that was a mystery she couldn’t ever solve. Years later, when Alicia had skipped a red light and was asked to do community service in the Santa Trinidad neighborhood, she crossed paths with Pablo again. Pablo was in charge of the foundation she’d started working at. He understood the reason why she was still upset with him, and he tried to explain that he chose to distance himself from her because he wanted to get ordained, and a romantic relationship would’ve ruined his chances of becoming a priest. Alicia forgave him because she couldn’t stay mad at him anymore. She was immediately attracted to him, and surprisingly, Pablo felt the same way about her. Only this time, he realized that maybe Alicia had come back into his life because they were meant to be together. He decided to abandon his dream of getting ordained, and instead focused on building a life with Alicia. They eventually got married, but somewhere deep down, Pablo regretted not fulfilling his dream. Now, as it turned out, guilt played a role in convincing Pablo to get married to Alicia. After hooking up one time, Alicia got pregnant, and she always wished that Pablo was by her side when she made the decision to undergo an abortion. Though she never held a grudge against Pablo, because there was no way for him to know that she was pregnant. But we gradually discover in Just Alice that Pablo had tried to reconnect with Alicia after leaving abruptly, and that was when he’d overheard her discussing her pregnancy with her friend Suzanna. He was petrified, so instead of supporting her, he ran away. He thought it was divine fate that they crossed paths again, and this time he was ready to take responsibility. He was elated when he discovered that she was pregnant, but that was before he learned that Alicia had been cheating on him.

How did Alicia try to fix her relationships?

Alicia tried to find a balance between her two lives. She was always on the move because she had to give time to both her partners and ensure they didn’t get suspicious about her. Now, it was a tiring task because she was constantly traveling and lying to both Pablo and Alejo. There was undeniably a thrill in always living on the edge, but she also knew that her happiness wouldn’t last long. One day or the other, the men would discover the truth, and she would have to face the consequences of her actions. Things got complicated when Alejo took an interest in Pablo. His dedication in ensuring the wellbeing of his neighborhood and his bold protest against Marcelo, the presidential candidate, who had decided to build a metro by displacing the locals, caught Alejo’s attention. He’d decided to write a book about Pablo, so naturally he tried to get to know the young man well. Alicia discouraged him from working on the book, and she tried to establish that, since she was working for Marcelo, it would impact her job. Alejo felt demotivated, and while he didn’t continue working on the manuscript, as public figures, Alejo and Pablo often crossed paths. Alicia had been planning to come clean to Pablo and Alejo, and after she discovered that she was pregnant, she realized it was high time she explained the situation to them. As expected, both the men were furious. They didn’t care how Alicia felt, because there was no denying that she’d been fooling them for months. They were not in a state to listen to her explanation, and they both left. Alicia wondered if she should’ve continued lying, because confessing the truth destroyed her. She knew it was impossible for Pablo and Alejo to come to terms with the fact that she was capable of loving two people equally at the same time, but then again, deep down she hoped that they would make the effort to understand her. One day, when she stopped by Alejo’s, she felt weak, and she started to bleed. As much as Alejo was disappointed in the situation he was in, he cared about Alicia’s health, and he wasn’t ready to watch her suffer. He begged her to rest, and he immediately contacted a doctor to find out if she was doing alright. The doctor confirmed that there was no reason to worry, and he also stated that Alicia was carrying twins. After facing the fear of losing the baby, Pablo and Alejo realized that even though things didn’t turn out the way they’d expected, they cared deeply about Alicia and the twins. The men ended up discussing the two versions of Alicia that they fell in love with, and they realized that there was no point in holding a grudge against one another because, at the end of the day, Alicia loved them both as well, and she mattered to them. Alicia was relieved when she watched the two men she had fallen in love with bond.

What happened to Marcelo?

Pablo was disheartened when he discovered that Alicia had been working for the man who was essentially trying to destroy his neighborhood for political leverage. Alicia publicly opposed Marcelo to establish that she was never supportive of his decision. Marcelo tried to convince the people of Santa Trinidad that he would build a housing complex for them and they would have legal papers to prove their ownership, and in exchange they had to willingly evacuate and allow his government to build the metro as planned. The innocent locals assumed that Marcelo had good intentions, whereas in reality he wouldn’t care about fulfilling his promise once the land was evacuated. She begged the people of the neighborhood not to trust Marcelo on television, and as someone who’d worked closely with him, she hoped people would listen to her because no one knew Marcelo like she did. Pablo had no choice but to extend his support to Marcelo’s competitor. Although he wasn’t sure if he wanted to make a political statement, Marcelo didn’t leave him an option. While Pablo thought Mancilla would soon call in a favor, he was surprised to see that the man was truly dedicated to his cause and just wanted his support. Mancilla provided legal support to the people of Saint Trinidad, and they finally were able to legalize their homes. They were hopeful that Marcelo would not succeed in evicting them now that they had legal rights over their land. The ending, though, hinted at the possibility that Mancilla had lost the elections, but considering the series didn’t delve into how the result affected the lives of the locals, maybe Pablo, with his newfound recognition and legal support from Mancilla’s team, managed to protect the neighborhood he grew up in. If the show returns with a second season, then maybe we’ll get to find out if Marcelo’s plan of building a metro and a mall had come true. Perhaps the show will focus on the conflict between Pablo and Marcelo, and of course Alicia will support Pablo in every possible way.

Did Alejo, Pablo, and Alicia stay in touch?

The ending of Just Alice revealed that Alicia, Alejo, and Pablo belonged to the rare 1% of hetero-paternity. The biological fathers of the twins were different, and therefore they were step-siblings by birth. Alicia never wanted to get a paternity test done, but the doctor handling her case went ahead and revealed the details anyway. Alicia had the result, but she chose not to immediately discuss it with Alejo and Pablo, because she needed time to process the information. She also feared that her husbands might abandon the careers that they’d chosen (Pablo decided to become a priest again, and Alejo had accepted a job as a cultural attaché in New York) if they learned about the test. She didn’t want to burden them with responsibilities since she’d already decided to deal with the pregnancy alone and raise her children all by herself. Since Alejo and Pablo hadn’t willingly agreed to the bigamous arrangement, she didn’t think it was fair to put pressure on them. Though five months later, during her book launch, she wanted both her ex-lovers to be there in the audience because she believed it was because of them that she’d learned that love had no limitations. Samuel convinced Pablo to attend the launch; meanwhile, Alejo’s former editor and Benjamin revealed that Alicia was the reason he was debt-free; she had used all the money she received from the book royalties to clear his debt, and they believed he must personally thank her. Alejo agreed; he was proud to see Alicia on stage discussing her radical decision to love two men without caring about the opinion of others. Alicia’s water broke during the launch, and she gave birth to two beautiful babies. Her heart was full watching Pablo and Alejo support her when she needed them the most. Later, she revealed the hetero-paternity, and she asked the men to go through the report if they wanted to know which one was their biological child. But at the end of Just Alice, Alejo and Pablo chose not to look at the report because they didn’t care about the technicalities anymore. They adored both the children, and they’d decided to be fathers to the twins. Alicia was overjoyed—this was all she had ever wanted, to focus solely on the love they shared as individuals. Alejo, Pablo, and Alicia remained in touch, but they were not in a relationship. Every other week, the fathers visited the twins, and although there were days when Alicia missed the romantic relationship she shared with Alejo and Pablo, she was grateful that they ended things on a happy note and they continued to be a part of each other’s lives. Pablo had become a priest, and he was happy dedicating his life to social causes, and Alejo was appointed as an ambassador, and he enjoyed the life he’d built.

What happened to Benjamin, Samuel, Laura, and Susana?

Benjamin and Samuel had spent five months apart; Samuel had decided to pursue filmmaking, while Benjamin had started working behind the desk at a local hostel. When Alicia was admitted, Benjamin and Samuel finally got the chance to catch up again, and they realized that they never got over each other, and they decided to give their relationship another chance. Samuel was no longer afraid of coming out, and he expected his father to respect his decision. It wasn’t easy for Eliseo to accept that his son was homosexual, but then again, he never stopped caring about Samuel, and all he wanted as a father was for his son to be happy. In the final episode of Just Alice, Laura proposed to Martin and Eva that they must all consider entering an open relationship. Seeing her friend Alicia so closely, Laura had realized that love was complex, but at the same time, it was important to be honest. She chose to forgive her partner, Martin, after he cheated on her with Eva because she had already started to question monogamous relationships. But she didn’t think it was fair to keep Eva in the dark since she was also in a relationship with Martin. Eva, who was pregnant with Martin’s child, was impressed by Laura’s courage, and she ultimately decided that maybe it wouldn’t be the worst idea to be in an open relationship. Susana didn’t find love this season, but she’d learned an important lesson—to not run away from her problems and her feelings, and perhaps that will help her connect with someone, maybe next season?
