‘Sky Rojo’ Season 1 Summary & Ending, Explained – Breakthrough To Freedom

Published

Sky Rojo Season 1 follows the story of three women forced into prostitution. It’s a liberating narrative of their actions trying to break free from the evils who are harassing their mental, physical and emotional sanity. This Spanish series has been created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the duo famously known for creating a popular drama series, Money Heist. Sky Rojo, however, is totally different from their previous work.

Season 1 includes 8 episodes of 25 minutes each, in Spanish language but available with a dub in English on Netflix. The most important question to ask is, is it engaging enough like the Money Heist? Well, let’s figure it out.

‘Sky Rojo’ Season 1: Plot Summary

The story follows three hookers, Coral, Wendy, and Gina who work in a fantasy club,  Las Novias Club in Tenerife. The club is created and operated by Romeo who handles the operation with the help of his henchmen, Moisés and Christian.

All the prostitutes in Romeo’s club work only because they are in need of financial help and Romeo doesn’t shy away from helping them out. However, he also makes sure that these hookers are always in Romeo’s debt.

Things get pretty wild when a Cuban hooker named Gina saves enough to pay off Romeo’s debt and demands her passport. Romeo took it as a threat to his kingdom, where one can come but can’t leave. He imposes other debts on Gina and asks her to pay off that as well, which pisses Gina. She tries to attack Romeo but Romeo strikes back. He pierces her breast with a sharp object. Listening to the brawl, two other hookers, Coral and Wendy run for Gina’s help. Coral, unable to save the girls, unexpectedly breaks Romeo’s skull. The three are flabbergasted. They try to run away from the club and while being on the run, they kill Romeo’s receptionist as well.

With two murders on their name, Coral, Wendy, and Gina can’t think straight. They can’t cross the border without their passports and Romeo’s henchmen, Moisés and Christian are chasing them like hounds. Suddenly, the hookers get the news that Romeo is alive and he is coming to get revenge.

With seductive and engaging voiceovers narrated mostly by Coral (Verónica Sánchez), the series follows the aspirations, dreams, desires, horrors, and dilemmas of these three women. The narrative makes its shift to the past to depict the before-lives of these three women before they were forced into prostitution. Coral holds the center stage because of her own choice to enter the business and having a multi-layered personality filled with a horrifying past. It is Carol who enchants Romeo as well and when she betrays him, he takes it personally. In Sky Rojo, the words are heavy but the actions are cliche. The story doesn’t impress you with any surprise element. It only showcases what we have seen and dealt with before. Though the dialogues/conversation is engaging, the drama throughout dwells on shaky ground. Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato hold the talent to astonish you but Sky Rojo fails to impress entirely.

‘Sky Rojo’ Season 1: Ending Explained

The girls decide to put an end to this cat-and-mouse chase. Carol coins a plan to steal their passports from Romeo’s safe, while Wendy and Gina wait for her on a pump. Coral strikes Romeo inside his office and he falls down due to a heart attack but it’s at this moment when Coral’s morale wakes up. She tries to save Romeo who wakes up and grabs Coral’s neck to kill her.

Subsequently, the pimps Moisés and Christian chase Wendy and Gina. Moisés drops his brother Christian in the middle of the road and continues the pursuit alone. In a chase, Moisés drops the car in a ditch, and Wendy and Gina put sand on his car from a crane, putting an end to the drama. However, Gina notices that Wendy is bleeding uncontrollably and can end up dead any minute.

Season 2 will further explore their struggle to break through to freedom, but will Romeo let Carol live? And will Wendy survive the bleeding? Season 2 will tell better.

Sky Rojo might not be lasting, but it is short and crisp. If you are looking for a light, sensational and seductive piece of drama, then do check out this short ‘Season 1’ streaming on Netflix.
